Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery

Also known as Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy | Keyhole removal of the gallbladder

What Is the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver that stores bile, a fluid that helps digest fat. Problems like gallstones or inflammation can cause pain, and the usual treatment is to remove the gallbladder.

What Is This Surgery?

This is a keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery to remove the gallbladder. A thin tube with a camera, called a laparoscope, lets the surgeon see inside the body on a screen, so there is no need for a large cut.
Compared to open surgery, this approach causes less pain, leaves smaller scars, and allows a quicker return to normal life.

When Is It Needed?

Gallstones causing pain (biliary colic)
Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
Gallbladder polyps larger than 1 cm
Gallbladder not functioning normally and causing symptoms

How It Is Done

The surgery is done under general anaesthesia. Three to four small cuts are made in the belly, each about half an inch to one inch long. Gas is used to gently expand the belly so the surgeon has room to work. A camera is placed through one cut to view the area on a screen. Using thin instruments through the other cuts, the surgeon carefully separates the gallbladder and removes it. The small cuts are then closed with stitches or surgical glue.

Life Without a Gallbladder

Life continues normally without a gallbladder. Bile flows directly from the liver into the intestine. Most people do not need any long-term diet changes, though some find it helpful to go easy on fatty foods at first.
Benefits
  • Small cuts with minimal scarring
  • Less pain than open surgery
  • Many patients go home within 24 hours, depending on their condition
  • Quicker return to daily activities
Recovery

Avoid heavy lifting and hard exercise for about one to two weeks. Diet can return to normal gradually, with fatty foods limited at first. Full recovery usually takes two to three weeks, though this varies by patient.

Risks

As with any surgery, there can be risks such as bleeding, infection, or injury to nearby structures. In rare cases, the surgeon may need to switch to open surgery for safety. These risks are explained clearly before the procedure.
